At Oasis Animal Hospital, our dental cleanings are so much more! We perform all procedures under full anesthesia and we have a full dental suite for extractions and mass removals. Even if we do not perform a dental on your dog, you should be asking your veterinarian a few questions about how they provide dental care. The safest protocol is to do full anesthesia, and if extractions are needed. Also, be sure and ask your vet if they have a dental drill. Many extractions that are needed for your pet’s health require a drill! Read more about dental procedures below.
Our patients are placed under full anesthesia with comprehensive monitoring equipment and fluid administration through a catheter.
ROUTINE DENTAL CLEANINGS
Why do we recommend them?
Dental healthcare is a very important part of your pet’s care. Routine dental cleanings, like your visits to the dentist, prolong the life of the tooth, prevent dental abscesses, prevent bad breath, and help in the prevention of systemic disease.
Why do we perform dental cleanings under full anesthesia?
Full anesthesia allows us to perform the most comprehensive examination of your pet’s mouth. This includes probing the gums, examining each tooth thoroughly, and it also allows us to protect their airway during the procedure from harmful bacteria and water used during the procedure. Non-sedation dental procedures and dental procedures performed without full intubation (full anesthesia) do not provide these benefits!
Our anesthesia protocols include a comprehensive approach to your pet’s health. So, during a dental cleaning or extraction procedure, we have a warming blanket under your pet, full monitoring equipment to show heart-rate, blood pressure, temperature, and more. We also have our registered technicians monitoring anesthesia during the procedure.
We also perform comprehensive blood-work and place a catheter for these procedures to allow us to anticipate as many complications as possible and be able to respond appropriately.
We utilize a full dental suite that includes an ultrasonic scaler, polisher, and drill that allows us to extract teeth. We also utilize a special cleaning solution that decreases the amount of bacterial growth on the teeth after cleaning.
